Da die Produktion des LKW Magirus-Deutz 5 t tmil (4x2) Typ 168M11FL mit Pritsche und Plane 1987 auslief, wurde für die Deckung eines weiteren Bedarfs der mit dem gleichen Motor ausgestattete LKW Iveco-Magirus 5 t tmil (4x4) Typ 110-17AW mit Pritsche und Plane ab 1988 in die Bundeswehr eingeführt. Das Fahrzeug wird von einem 6-Zylinder Dieselmotor BF 6 L 913 mit einer Leistung von 124 kW/168 PS in Verbindung mit einem 5-Ganggetriebe ZF S 6-36 angetrieben. Der (4x4) Antrieb gibt eine deutlich bessere Geländegängigkeit.

Because the production of the 5-tonne truck (4x2) Magirus-Deutz type 168M11FL was terminated in 1987 further procurement efforts were deviated to the 5-tonne truck (4x4) Iveco-Magirus type 110-17AW , which is equipped with the same engine, from 1988 onwards. The vehicle is powered by a BF 6 L 913  6-cylinder diesel engine developing 124 kW or 168 hp connected to a ZF S 6-36 gearbox. The (4x4) drive gives a far better cross-country capability.
